The issue of illegal mining has always been a concern to Caritas Solwezi. Even before the opening of Kansanshi and Lumwana Mines, this problem had already been identified. In fact the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) had started talking to authorities way before the ZEIP project was conceived. This illegal mining is taking place in all the districts where mineral deposits have been discovered; these are Kasempa, Mufumbwe, Mwinilunga, Solwezi and Kabompo (in a small way).
